Quran taught in public schools as 'God's final revelation'

In a federally funded Islamic indoctrination curriculum offered to America’s public schools, the Muslim holy book, the Quran, is described as “God’s final revelation to humankind.”

Martin Mawyer, president of Christian Action Network, objects to this teaching, which is offered under a program entitled “Access Islam” and distributed through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (PBS).

“I am deeply disturbed that our nation’s Christian, and other non-Muslim students, are being taught unequivally that ‘the Quran was revealed in Arabic to Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel over a period of 22 years, beginning in 610 CE and ending in 632 CE.’ ”

“This is taken straight from the lesson plan,” Mawyer said, “yet nowhere do students learn that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died on the cross, rose on the third day and ascended to Heaven. These are the truths that we, as Christians, believe in – but our schools are teaching our kids a false doctrine.”

As Christians, said Mawyer, “we believe that the Bible is God's final revelation -- most certainly not the Quran.”

The lesson plan also teaches the following:

“Muhammad’s early followers were provided with guidelines for living a moral and dignified life favorable to God, sometimes through passages (in the Quran) that spoke to their immediate circumstances and other times through more universal teachings. As Islam spread over time into new areas, Arabic became a common language for Muslims in many lands. Quranic teachings influenced Muslim cultures, and its references to learning, education, observation, and the use of reason stimulated Muslims to pursue knowledge in many fields.”

Mawyer asked, “A moral and dignified life? What we are seeing around the world is that Islam is inspiring murder, even genocide, rape, degradation of women, immorality and worse. Why are our children not learning about this?”

The lesson also teaches students “about the Quran and its rich history of promoting learning and providing Muslims with guidance in their lives” – “a patently false statement,” said Mawyer. “In Pakistan a Muslim girl was shot in the face and nearly killed because she was going to school.”

In a slam against Christianity, students are taught about the Crusades and Mongol invasion, and are encouraged to consider “Muslims’ outlook of the world, particularly in the madrasahs (schools).”

Students also learn the locations, sizes and distances between Islamic centers in the United States.

“Once again, our students are being taught a whitewashed version of Islam and what the Quran really says,” commented Mawyer. “This study of the Quran completely ignores its demand that Christians and Jews be killed, and that Islam be expanded by force if necessary as the only religion on the planet.

“Our students should not be taught anything about Islam,” he added. “This type of indoctrination does not belong in our public schools, and it certainly should never be supported with our tax dollars.”
